PlanSwift vs PixelTakeoff
PlanSwift is a long-established Windows takeoff and estimating package from ConstructConnect, with published per-seat pricing. PixelTakeoff is a native Windows and macOS takeoff app built around a measurement engine you can also drive with an AI agent. Here is how they actually differ.
About this page
We make PixelTakeoff, so read this the way you would read any vendor's comparison. What we can promise is sourcing: every claim about PlanSwift comes from ConstructConnect's own site or documentation, linked at the bottom, and checked on 19 September 2026. Where they are better, the page says so.

| Measuring an area | Click once inside it. The engine finds the boundary itself, curves and all, and returns the quantity. | Trace its outline. Auto Takeoff, on the higher Core plan, detects some areas for you; anything curved or awkward is drawn point by point. |
| Measuring a run | Click the run once and it is followed end to end, dashed and dotted lines included. | Trace the run, segment by segment. |
| Counting symbols | Point at one symbol and every other instance on the sheet is found and tallied. | Auto Count finds repeated symbols. Included on both plans. |

Advantage, PixelTakeoff Advantage, PlanSwift No rule · no meaningful difference
In one line. PlanSwift buys you takeoff and estimating in one Windows package, with a price you can read off a page. PixelTakeoff buys you the measuring: areas in a click instead of a traced outline, runs followed instead of drawn, symbols found instead of tapped, on a Mac as well as a PC.
Three clicks, not three hundred
Almost every takeoff is the same three jobs repeated: an area, a run, a symbol counted. This is where the time goes, so this is where PlanSwift and PixelTakeoff differ most.
One click inside it.
Click inside a paved area, a planting bed or a roof plane and the boundary is found for you, curves and all. Nothing to trace, no vertices to chase, and the more awkward the shape the more that matters.
One click on the run.
Click a kerb, an edge, a fence or a pipe run and it is followed end to end. Dashed and dotted lines are joined across their gaps rather than measured piece by piece.
One symbol, then all of them.
Point at a single tree, light fitting or fixture and every other instance on the sheet is found and tallied, rotated and mirrored copies included. You check the result instead of clicking it out.
The mode that makes a dense sheet behave
A busy drawing is where takeoff tools normally give up and hand the work back to you. Hueprint view makes the sheet legible to the tools, so a fill stops where the material stops instead of bleeding into whatever is drawn beside it. Turn it on and the one-click measuring above keeps working on exactly the sheets that used to need tracing.
Built on our proprietary, patent-pending colour-separation technology.
Estimating, in a format you already know
Items, cost libraries, markups, quotes, revisions and bid analysis, laid out the way Candy users already work, so the learning curve is mostly recognition. It is in build now and lands inside the same $1,099 seat at no extra cost, not as a second licence or a higher tier.
What PlanSwift is genuinely good at
No comparison is worth reading if the other product is a straw man. These are real reasons estimators buy it.
Onboarding is in the box
Their pricing page includes live one-to-one training with a specialist, and first-year updates and support, before the optional support renewal. For a team that wants someone to sit down with them rather than read documentation, that is worth real money.
Estimating you can use today
Assemblies, cost databases and a plugin ecosystem built up over many years, working now. Ours is in build and included in the same seat when it lands, but shipping beats coming soon and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
A large installed base
Plenty of estimators already know it, and there is a deep well of templates, forum answers and people you can hire who have used it. That lowers the cost of switching to it, which is a different thing from being quicker to work in.
Where PixelTakeoff takes a different line
PLATFORM
It runs on your Mac
PlanSwift is Windows only, and ConstructConnect support is explicit that it does not run on Apple Silicon: the old Boot Camp workaround is gone on those machines. If your estimators are on MacBooks, PixelTakeoff is a native app, not a virtual machine you have to keep alive.
SPEED
One click, not forty
This is the difference that shows up in your day. A paved area with a curved edge is one click here and a traced polygon there, and the gap widens with every vertex: the harder the boundary, the more clicks it costs to trace and the less difference it makes to us. Runs are followed instead of drawn, and symbols are found instead of tapped one by one.
MEASURING
Built for the pixels, not just the vectors
Scanned sheets, flattened PDFs and drawings that arrive as images are where vector-first tools fall back to manual tracing. PixelTakeoff measures what is actually on the page, so an image-only sheet behaves the same as a clean vector one.
AI
An agent can drive the real tools
PixelTakeoff exposes its tools over a local MCP endpoint, so Claude or Codex can run the takeoff and you review what it did on your canvas. The agent never invents a number: the engine measures, the agent only decides where to click. It is off until you turn it on.
SCALE
Large sheets stay workable
Tested on 16,000 × 14,000 pixel drawings and multi-sheet PDFs over a gigabyte, with tiles loaded and unloaded as you pan so memory stays bounded.
So which should you buy?
Buy PlanSwift if
- You need priced estimating with assemblies working this month, not next release.
- You depend on a specific PlanSwift plugin or template library.
- Your whole team is on Windows and nobody wants to learn a new tool.
Buy PixelTakeoff if
- You measure a lot of irregular areas, long runs or repeated symbols.
- Anyone on your team estimates from a Mac.
- Your drawings arrive scanned, flattened or image-heavy.
- You would rather pay $1,099 a seat than $2,000, with estimating included when it ships.
- You want an AI agent to do the first pass and leave you the judgement calls.
PlanSwift,
answered.
Does PlanSwift run on a Mac?
Not natively. PlanSwift is a Windows application, and ConstructConnect support states it has never run on Apple Silicon Macs, where Boot Camp is no longer available. Older Intel Macs could run it through a virtual machine. PixelTakeoff ships a native macOS build alongside Windows.
How much does PlanSwift cost compared with PixelTakeoff?
PlanSwift publishes $2,000 per year for one Essential seat and $3,000 per year for Core, with discounts on additional seats. PixelTakeoff pricing is shared with you before your free trial ends, and the trial itself needs no card.
Can I try both before deciding?
Yes, and you should. Both run 14 days, full features, and neither asks for a card. Run the same sheet through both, ideally an awkward one rather than a clean sample, because clean samples are where every takeoff tool looks equally good.
Is PixelTakeoff an estimating package?
No. It is takeoff first. Quantities export to Excel with formulas preserved, and to CSV and annotated PDF, so they drop into whatever you price in. If you want measuring and pricing in a single product, that is a genuine point for PlanSwift.
